Land Clearing in Natalbany, LA

Serving Natalbany · Tangipahoa Parish

Your Natalbany Contractor: From Raw Land to Finished Build

Natalbany is an unincorporated community in Tangipahoa Parish, named for the nearby Natalbany River, which drains into Lake Maurepas. It sits on US 51 between Hammond and Tickfaw, with about 2,500 people at the 2020 census. Natalbany has no town government, so Tangipahoa Parish rules cover land work here directly. If your Natalbany lot is wooded, land clearing opens the ground for a new house or shop.

From our base in Covington, Natalbany sits about 24 miles west as the crow flies. Natalbany Road, which is LA 1064, meets North Morrison Boulevard, which is US 51, in the community. Farther west, Natalbany Road passes over Interstate 55 with no exit. To the east, it crosses the CN railroad and ends at Morris Road, just north of Hammond Northshore Regional Airport.

Clearing a Wooded Lot in Natalbany

In 1894, the Natalbany Lumber Company bought a sawmill in Natalbany, and that mill burned in 1938. Across the parish today, most Tangi soils are in pasture or pine woodland. On a Natalbany homesite, our dozer and track loader clear the building spot, and an excavator lifts out the stumps. Pines you want to keep can stay, and forestry mulching grinds the brush under them into a mulch layer.

In Natalbany, the parish requires a land clearing permit for any parcel of 5 acres or more. Any major subdivision needs the permit, and so does any special use residential commercial development. A single home with a construction permit is excluded from that rule. Before any trees come down, read the Tangipahoa Parish land clearing permit rules and confirm your parcel with the parish.

Dirt Pads, Drainage and Ponchatoula Creek in Natalbany

Census Bureau estimates for 2023 count about 1 in 8 of Natalbany's roughly 1,300 homes as a mobile home. The installer sets and ties down a mobile home, and we build the compacted dirt pad under it. Tangi soils have a dense fragipan, and water can sit perched above it 1.5 to 3 feet down. A slab home or shop gets a house pad of clay we haul in, compacted and graded to shed rain.

Ponchatoula Creek winds around the west side of Independence and Tickfaw, then southeast through Natalbany. Much of its channel has been dredged, and its chief use today is drainage. If rain pools by your house, a French drain or other yard drainage work can move it off the lot. The parish Permit Office issues driveway and culvert permits, and we build the gravel driveway and set the culvert.

Questions From Natalbany Property Owners

Call (985) 966-2584

Do you clear land and build pads in Natalbany?
Yes. Natalbany is about 24 miles west of Covington, our home base, as the crow flies. We take jobs within about 50 miles of home, so Natalbany is well within range. Our dump trucks deliver fill dirt there by the truckload, too. We hold LA State Lic# 78829 and are fully insured, with over 20 years on Northshore ground. Every estimate is free, and pricing is by the load or by the job after a site visit.
Who issues permits for land work in Natalbany?
Outside Hammond's city limits, the Tangipahoa Parish Permit Office does, from offices in Hammond and Amite. Natalbany is the only census designated place in the parish and has no town government. If your lot sits inside Hammond's city limits, ask the City of Hammond what applies. Natalbany Road is LA 1064, a state highway, so a new drive onto it waits for DOTD approval. That request begins with the Louisiana DOTD district permit specialist where your property sits.
Do I need a parish permit to clear a homesite in Natalbany?
Not for a single home with a construction permit, which the parish rules exclude. The application's office checklist also lists a single family site with no building permit. So get your building permit first, or ask the parish before clearing. Otherwise, parcels of 5 acres or more, major subdivisions and special use residential commercial developments need the clearing permit. The fee is $100, and you sign the application as the property owner. We work through the paperwork with you.
Do you build mobile home pads in Natalbany?
Yes. Our dump trucks haul in clay, and we compact it into the pad the home will sit on. Setting the home and tying it down is the installer's work, so ask them how big the pad should be. The parish sets the required height, and a licensed surveyor certifies it. For a flood zone determination on your lot, ask the parish Planning Department.
What rules apply when clearing near Ponchatoula Creek or a ditch?
Keep all debris out of Ponchatoula Creek and the roadside ditches. Dumping debris into a stream, river or drainage channel is illegal in Tangipahoa Parish. The parish also asks residents to keep drainage channels on their property free of debris and other blockages. All development in the parish needs permits, and development in the floodplain without them is illegal. Under Louisiana law, digging waits at least 2 full business days after a call to 811.
