Land Clearing in Independence, LA

Serving Independence · Tangipahoa Parish

Your Independence Contractor: From Raw Land to Finished Build

Independence is a Tangipahoa Parish town of about 1,600 people, 5 miles south of Amite City, the parish seat. The town began in 1852 as the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad came through. Known at times as Little Italy, Independence holds its Sicilian heritage festival on the second weekend in March. Around town, a homesite or shop lot cut from wooded land starts with land clearing.

From our base in Covington, LA 25 runs north to Folsom, where LA 40 heads west into Tangipahoa Parish. It passes through Loranger and over the Tangipahoa River, then crosses the railroad tracks to meet US 51. US 51 is West Railroad Avenue here, and West 3rd Street carries LA 40 to exit 40 on Interstate 55. At about 33 miles, Independence sits inside the roughly 50 mile radius we cover for clearing and dirt work. We hold LA State Lic# 78829 and carry full insurance, and every estimate is free.

Land Clearing and Parish Permits Around Independence

Most Tangi soils, a series established in Tangipahoa Parish in 1985, are in pasture or pine woodland. Where a house or shop is going near town, our dozer pushes trees over and our excavators dig out stumps. If you want the pines kept, forestry mulching grinds the brush under them where it stands. In Tangipahoa Parish, dumping debris into a stream, river or drainage channel is illegal, so brush stays out of ditches.

Outside the town limits, Tangipahoa Parish requires a land clearing permit for any parcel of 5 acres or more. Any major subdivision or special use residential commercial development needs the permit too. On 20 acres or more, the application needs a wetland jurisdictional determination approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Wetlands found on the site are marked in the field and left uncleared. Cutting into the 25 foot perimeter buffer can delay a major subdivision or special use plan up to 24 months.

House Pads, Driveways and Culverts Near Independence

Tangi soils can hold water perched 1.5 to 3 feet down, above a dense layer called a fragipan. Where water sits that shallow, we build the house pad from compacted clay and slope it so rain runs off. Outside the town limits, the parish Permit Office issues the building permit and does a flood determination on the property. The pad goes to the height on your plans, and a licensed surveyor or engineer handles any elevation certificate.

Outside the town limits, the Permit Office also issues driveway and culvert permits, new or replacement, for homes or businesses. We build gravel and limestone driveways on a compacted base and pipe the roadside ditch with a driveway culvert. Where rainwater stands near the house, yard drainage gives it a path off the lot. Inside the town limits, ask the Town of Independence which rules apply.

Independence FAQ

Questions From Independence Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Independence. Don’t see yours? Call us, we’re happy to help.

Call (985) 966-2584

How far is Independence from Covington, and do you work there?
Independence is about 33 miles from our Covington base by LA 25 and LA 40, and yes, we work there. That sits inside the roughly 50 mile radius we cover. We have over 20 years on Northshore ground and hold LA State Lic# 78829. Each job is quoted after a site visit, and the estimate is free.
Does clearing land near Independence need a parish permit?
Outside the town limits, it depends on the parcel. The parish permit covers any parcel of 5 acres or more, any major subdivision and special use residential commercial developments. A single home with a construction permit is excluded, and so are farming and commercial forestry with a logging permit. Confirm your parcel with the parish Permit Office first. The application fee is $100. You sign as the property owner, and we work through it with you.
Can you build a house pad or shop pad on this ground?
Yes. Our dump trucks bring clay in for the pad and haul the topsoil out. We compact the pad and slope it to shed rain, built to the height on your plans. Any elevation certificate comes from a licensed surveyor or engineer. We can pour the concrete slab on the finished pad, and builders also hire us for dirt pad jobs.
Do driveways and culverts onto parish roads need a permit?
Outside the town limits, the Tangipahoa Parish Permit Office issues driveway and culvert permits, so check there before work starts. Its form covers a new drive or culvert, a replacement and subsurface drainage, for homes or businesses. We build the gravel or limestone drive on a compacted base and set the culvert in the ditch. Inside the town limits, ask the Town of Independence.
Does it matter whether my land is inside the town limits?
Yes. Inside the town limits, the Town of Independence takes its own forms at City Hall, 583 West Railroad Avenue. Ask the town what applies to your lot. Outside it, the parish Permit Office, with offices in Hammond and Amite, handles building, land clearing, driveway and culvert permits. Rules from St. Tammany, our home parish, do not carry over to Independence.
