Fill dirt delivery starts with a dump truck and a plan for where the dirt goes. W2 Commercial Construction hauls fill dirt, topsoil, sand, limestone and recycled crushed concrete by the truckload out of Covington. We deliver across Mandeville, Madisonville, Abita Springs, Lacombe, Slidell, Pearl River and Folsom in St. Tammany Parish. Hammond, Ponchatoula, Metairie, Kenner and New Orleans are on the route too.
We own the dump trucks, so the dirt and the machine to spread it arrive together. A load can raise a low spot, build a house pad or a mobile home pad, or backfill a trench. We run excavators, a track loader, a dozer and a skid steer to place and rough grade the material. Fill dirt is the structural dirt that goes under things. Clay fill and select fill pack down hard, so they build up pads and raise low ground. That matters here, because the terrace soils around Covington are somewhat poorly drained and slowly permeable. Topsoil is the dark layer that grows grass, and sand drains fast enough to backfill trenches. Under a slab, the state code says fill has to be free of vegetation and foreign material.
#57 limestone is 3/4 inch crushed stone that sheds water fast. #610 limestone runs 1 inch and down with fines, so it compacts into a hard base. The state residential code allows a 4 inch base course of crushed stone or crushed concrete under a slab. We produce recycled crushed concrete, and it goes out under gravel and limestone driveways and shop floors. When a plan calls for structural fill, a geotechnical engineer specifies it and we haul to that spec.
Parish code bans fill or improvements that cause adverse drainage impacts on an adjacent parcel. Net fill means any fill that raises the surface elevation of a property. Net fill is prohibited in any critical drainage area and on lots 90 feet or less in width. A lot that narrow needs a development plan approved by the parish engineering department before any fill. When the parish asks for a grade elevation form, a state-licensed engineer or land surveyor prepares it.
The cap on driveway fill depends on the lot. In a critical drainage area, fill for driveways must not exceed 6 inches above natural ground elevation. On a lot 90 feet or less in width, the cap is 12 inches above natural grade. South of Highway 190 between Mandeville and Slidell, the parish's Resilience Overlay District One bans fill that raises a parcel above its natural elevation. Minor grading at the house site and driveway can be allowed there, but not above 6 inches.
Volume is the first number we work out, and it starts with the cubic yard. One cubic yard of dirt is 27 cubic feet. Published cost guides put the average commercial dump truck at 8 to 12 cubic yards of dirt. One truck load typically holds 10 to 14 cubic yards. Access matters too, since a loaded truck needs room to back in and dump.
Coverage follows from depth. A 10 cubic yard load is 270 cubic feet, so 6 inches deep it covers 540 square feet. Spread 3 inches deep, the same load covers 1,080 square feet. We stage the loads where the machine can reach them, then spread from the pile. Shop and barn pads take their volume from the plan elevation, set by our site preparation and building pad work.
Dirt moves both directions on a job site. A trench, a pond or a pad cut makes spoil, and that spoil has to leave. We load it into our dump trucks and haul it off with the excess dirt and broken concrete. The digging behind most of that spoil is our excavation work. Clean concrete comes back to us as recycled crushed concrete.
Some loads we turn down. We do not take hazardous or contaminated material, and we do not run roll off dumpsters or junk removal. A driveway on a state highway cannot start until DOTD issues a signed, numbered permit certificate. Before we dig or haul, Louisiana One Call gets a call at 811 so buried lines get marked. Rough spreading comes with the load, and finish grading and dirt work sets the final slope.
